The two Shasta County sheriff’s Special Weapons and Tactics team members who shot and killed gunman Gregorio Estrada were identified as Det: Troy Clegg and Deputy Jason Gassaway.
The two fired seven shots, with one of those bullets killing Estrada. However, since both men were firing the same type of weapon, it isn’t known which one fired the fatal shot, said Lt. Scott Mayberry of the Redding Police Department. RPD is the law enforcement agency conducting the officer shooting investigation. Gassaway regularly works in the City of Shasta Lake and was a deputy in eastern Shasta County from 2002-05.
Clegg started his law enforcement career by graduating first in his Police Academy class. He then spent five years with a Southern California law enforcement agency before being hired by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office in 2006. He was a field training officer for the Sheriff’s Office and is a member of the SWAT, Dive, and Major Crimes Unit. In 2008 Detective Clegg was awarded the Sheriff’s Office Meritorious Service Award for taking a suspect into custody and rescuing a child the suspect had shot.
Gassaway has been employed with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office since 2000. Before coming to the Sheriff’s Office, he was an officer with the Northern California Police Department. He has been a Search and Rescue Team member, a K-9 Handler, a Field Training Officer, and a SINTF (narcotics) Agent. In addition, he is a SWAT team leader, Lead Defensive Tactics Instructor, and a SAGE (Shasta Anti-Gang Enforcement) member.
In 2006 he was named Shasta County’s Deputy of the Year.
